Scleral Fixation of IOL

Scleral Fixation of IOL in Aphakia without capsular support

What is aphakia?
When the natural crystalline lens of the eye is not present inside the eye, the condition is known as aphakia.

How is aphakia corrected?
High powered glasses and contact lenses were the options available in the past. Intraocular Lens(IOL) is used routinely to correct aphakia these days.

How is IOL implanted?
The cataract is removed sparing its capsule with phacoemulsification technique. The already calculated IOL is implanted in the capsular bag to get the focus back on the retina.

What is the scleral fixation of IOL?
It is a surgical procedure to implant an IOL by stitching or tucking its haptic in the sclera. It is indicated in eyes lacking capsular support because of a complication of trauma or previous surgery.

How is this method different from routine cataract IOL surgery?
This procedure needs special skills and equipment along with the specific design of IOL and sutures. Our eye surgeon Dr. Mazhry has a very particular interest in this technique. He has been practicing this procedure over last 25 years and has introduced his personal innovations as well.

Are there any special risks with this technique of scleral fixation?
The complication rate is higher as compared to regular cataract surgery. However, it can be minimized using proper measurements and technologies.
